Christians should immediately see that what is at stake is more than what happens to a few thousand embryos languishing in America's infertility clinics. What is really at stake here is how human beings will be viewed for generations to come. Shall we, in the name of science and medical compassion, redefine human beings in terms of their utility for curing the diseases that afflict other human beings? Shall we succumb entirely to the secular, materialist juggernaut that so dominates science, medicine and public policy and stand aside as all of society becomes increasingly organized under purely secular auspices? Shall we allow our Christian voice to be cast aside from the major public policy issues of the day?
These are some of the issues that confront us in the debate over stem cells. It is not simply about healing people or preventing "premature" deaths. Indeed, if our goal is to prevent such premature deaths, it would seem that causing the premature deaths of human embryos would not be considered a means to that end.
