Immortality Through Technology

The emergence of an increasingly sophisticated scientific knowledge and the development of more and more ways to intervene in the disease processes that kill us produced a remarkable "can do" mindset both among scientists and in much of the general population. There is a widespread belief that given adequate funding and turning loose the smartest people, we humans might nearly become unbounded in our efforts to reign in sickness, disease and even death.

It is as though we might secure the blessings of immortality by scientific and technological means. However, in our quest for immortality, we have reached a point where scientific inquiry and technological innovation may have outdistanced our ethics. Although we have a growing arsenal of technological marvels to use with the human body, we frequently find ourselves scrambling to figure how to use them ethically.
