Essentials of the Christian Worldview

Four Themes

In chapter two we discussed the nature of basic beliefs and how they function within a worldview. As control beliefs, they have the greatest influence upon the way that a person's worldview is shaped; they "color" the way the person looks at everything. If a person's basic beliefs can be undermined or shown to be false, the entire worldview itself begins to unravel.

In a Christian worldview, the two basic beliefs are that God is the Source of all that exists and all that is true. We can know that He exists and that He is the Creator of everything because He has revealed Himself to us. God has revealed Himself through the physical creation, Scripture and Jesus Christ.

All beliefs within the Christian worldview depend upon these two truths. If God were to cease to exist, or if his existence could be shown to be false, all other beliefs in the Christian worldview would crumble into meaninglessness.

Based upon these two basic beliefs, the Christian worldview unfolds along the contours of the biblical narrative of creation, fall, redemption and consummation. These four themes form the lens through which all of life is to be interpreted by the Christian. They capture the essence of the two basic beliefs (God is and God spoke) upon which the Christian view of reality is based.
